Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
