Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person so that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
