Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
