Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
