Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
