Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol.
