Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
