Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their particular problems can be remedied in rehab.
