Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehab.
