Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
