Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
