Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
