Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
