Offering gender-specific rehab services has shown to be very useful in circumstances where traditional rehabilitation settings have fallen short, like coping with situations within a women's life which can be unique and traumatic. Such issues may relate to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, or other serious issues which can be specific to women. Research shows that women also can get involved in substance abuse more easily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness because of drug abuse problems than males because of this. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to put off seeking out and receiving treatment, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. With this in mind, treatment services for women are created in order that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. After this step, counselors help women focus on both basic and gender specific issues which may have brought on their substance abuse.
