Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody so that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
