Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody so that their particular problems can be remedied in rehab.
