Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
