Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody so that their own problems can be treated in rehab.
