Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
