Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
