Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their own problems can be remedied in treatment.
