Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be handled in rehab.
