Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own problems can be handled in rehab.
