Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in treatment.
