Sadly, the simple truth is that millions of people actually choose to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not simply puts one's life in danger and puts passengers and others in danger as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually cause severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and in many cases prison time. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation as an alternative to other extreme penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other consequences of the crime, but sometimes decrease the seriousness of such penalties to some large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly participates drug rehabilitation and is also a first-time offender. Studies show that a large percentage of individuals who do receive drug and alcohol treatment for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for comparable charges later on.
