Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
