Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
