Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody so that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
