Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
