Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
