Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
