Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
