Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
