Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
