Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique problems can be remedied in treatment.
