Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
