Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
