Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
