Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
