Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person so that their own problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
