Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehab.
