Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
