Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
