Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
