Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in treatment.
