Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
