Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger substance abuse, or risky sexual conduct because of substance abuse may have caused the person to contract the illness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either because of their drug use or as a pre-existing problem before their drug abuse problem, typically require rehabilitation services tailor-made to meet their particular demands and challenges. Some challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS rarely care for themselves and take the proper medications they need to preserve their health. Consequently, they arrive to rehab in very poor physical shape and this will have to be addressed as a priority whilst addressing other critical issues. Apart from the obvious necessity to offer medical services whilst in rehabilitation, those that have HIV/AIDS will also need to address more deeply rooted issues which prompted their drug or alcohol use. Often, individuals have circumstances in their lives which are purely environmental which may have caused them to turn to drugs or alcohol, including oppressive conditions within their lives or damaging relationships. These are the concerns which treatment counselors will concentrate on as part of HIV/AIDS rehab services.
