Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
