Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
