Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
